In the heart of the mesmerizing rolling hills, lived a shepherd boy. His being was essentially pure, simple, and honest. His primary duty was to tend to his herd of ewes.
Their gentle baas and the whispering of the gales across the lone tree on the peak were his constant co-dwellers. Day in day, looking out for his responsibilities inculcated in him a sense of tranquil contentment.
However, there were the occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would long for company. During one such occasion out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a troublesome plan.
Stories of wolves prowling on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy opted to leveraged this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.
One afternoon he raced into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers rushed up the hills for rescue but saw no wolf.
The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This game continued for a few more days. But, one noon, a real wolf actually charge at the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed here to protect only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the town only to receive a lesson on honesty and the consequences of dishonesty.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is tough to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
